Think back to this time last year. Have you become a statistic? Are you one of the 92 percent who have failed to make it past the first few weeks of their new year resolution? If so, stop right there…don’t fall into the same trap most people fall into! Are you ready to become one of the 8% who succeed this year?
If you are, then here are the six things to either DO or AVOID.
1.Don’t call it a ‘resolution’ – make a goal
A resolution merely expresses that you will ‘try’ to achieve something. It’s non-committal and sounds like “I’ll try this” or “I hope to do this” or “I would love for this to happen”.
A goal, on the other hand, has a specific objective AND result. It’s a commitment that says, “Here’s exactly what I’m going to do, step by step, within a set time frame”. They’re very different. So, if you want to stop failing at the same resolutions every year – to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, quit smoking, drink less, cook more … then start by NOT making resolutions. Make a goal.
2. Stop doing the same things and expecting a different result
Albeit Einstein hit the nail on the head when he said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result”.
Let’s face it, the buzz of the new year wears off awfully fast, especially when you go back into the same old routines. So instead of making your new year resolutions and hoping for the best, try changing things up. Give that same old routine a jolt in a different direction. Consider small changes – take a packed lunch instead of eating out; go to bed and get up earlier; order smaller serves of rice; think about moving in different ways; try a dance class or HIIT session perhaps; go for a brisk walk in your lunch break…you get the idea!
Or simply, change your environment. Ditch the bad influences around you (be honest here, you know who and what they are) – those things that sabotage your efforts, leaving you to make the same failed wishes next year. Surround yourself with positive people and experiences that will help you stay focused on your goal.
3. Just Do It!
A big part of achieving what you want is actually about taking action. Don’t be one of those people who just talk about doing things, be someone who actually takes action. You don’t need 365 days of motivation, you only need 1! That’s right, one day of taking a positive step towards your new YOU resolution – the goal setting you. The beauty of taking action lies in the laws of motion – an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by a force – thanks Sir Isaac Newton! There never seems to be a perfect time to start, but the best time to start it is NOW. This minute. Less talk. More action. So take action NOW and download Active8me. We have created it for you to succeed.
4. Use your brain – it’s more powerful than you realise
Your brain is your best asset in making change and making 2019 different. Real change begins with changing your thinking. That means stop:
- making the same old excuses
- thinking about the ‘what-if’ and ‘if-only’ and start taking action
- doubting yourself
- thinking you can’t do something and empower yourself by thinking you can
- sabotaging your strongest force – your mind power!
And the good news is – you can change your thinking. How you think and feel is not a fixed response. There is a whole science emerging around brain plasticity. This concept highlights your ability to strengthen any circuit in the brain by simply using it more, making it easier to go that way naturally next time. You got it, your brain is just like a muscle, you need to use it effectively and use it more – it’s more powerful than you realise.
